March 2005 The Maldives have always faced two main problems — the threat of global warming and government by dictatorship. Bizarrely, the Tsunami appears to have had a positive impact on both. “The tide is now three to four times higher than it was 100 years ago,” states scientist Dr Ali. The government attempted to deal with this threat by building a artificial island high above sea level. When the Tsunami struck, it used this opportunity to permanently re-house residents on the nine lowest lying islands. Unexpectedly, the President also released political prisoners and promised multi-party democracy. Critics claim this is just a cynical ploy to attract more aid. But released prisoners believe these changes will be permanent. “I don’t see that things can be reversed. We’ve past the point of no return.” Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Lots of info in the full description, so click it to see: Here’s a room tour of a King Water Villa at the Hilton Maldives / Iru Fushi Resort & Spa, soon after check in. Built just over two years ago (2008), the hotel was originally built by an independent investor as the Iru Fushi Resort, but the economy led it to be leased to the Hilton group (which also has a Waldorf Astoria and Conrad property in the Maldives). Like all major Maldives resorts, this is located on its own island and has two rows of these “water villas” in addition to the beach rooms and is located in the Noonu Atoll, about a 40 minute seaplane flight from Male (you are required to use the very expensive seaplane). If you want my honest opinion: you have to take into account that, once you factor the very high price of food and beverages and the mandatory flights, the per-night cost here is roughly 00 per night. For that price, I’d give the room a 9/10 but the resort is only 7/10. The food quality isn’t as good as the prices, and the service was good but uneven. For that price (which makes a guest rightfully picky) I expect the same or better service than what I’ve seen at places like the Encore Las Vegas, and that really wasn’t the case here. The snorkeling, however, was as awesome as you’d imagine! I hope this helps you make a decision on where to stay, see what’s available, or just provides entertainment! [please excuse the fleck of dust that managed to make it inside my camera; I was using the …
