The Portuguese invaded and killed the reigning Sultan in 1558, the Maldives was under Portuguese colonial rule from then until Muhammad Thakurufaanu liberated Maldives in 1573 ending the colonial rule of fifteen years.Muhammad Thakurufaanu and his fellow men arrived in Male' on 1st of Rabee ul Awwal 981 A.H
Muhammad Thakurufaanu was the son of Khatheeb (island chief) Husain of Utheemu in Thiladhummathi Atoll and Lady Amina Dio.
Henceforth this victorious day is celebrated on the 1st of Rabee ul Awwal as the National Day of the Maldives, which falls on the third month of the Islamic Calendar.
Parades and march pasts are held on the streets of Male' and other islands every year to mark the occasion. Thousands of spectators converge on the city to watch the colourful parade along the streets of the city.
