Religion of the Maldives
Maldives is a Sunni Muslim nation. Islam is the religion of the State and the backbone of society. Before the arrival of Islam, Buddhism was the prevalent religion in the country. In 1153 AD a scholarly man of faith convinced the then ruling king of the virtues of Islam.
It is a matter of pride and honor to every Maldivian that Islam has, to this day, been one of the reasons why peace, harmony and understanding has prevailed in the land.
