A fire broke out at the State Trading Organization’s People’s Choice Medical Services warehouse in Male’ around 1:10pm today. Police and other security forces responded to the incident shortly after it was reported.
Haveeru reporters at the scene said that they could see fire and thick smoke bellowing out from top windows of the warehouse. Several police officers, firefighters, MNDF personnel and members of the public are assisting with extinguishing the fire. One of the firefighters was injured while combating the flames and was taken away from the scene.
Several vehicles in the area were moved away by security forces in case the fire spread out and those in the area combating the flames were wearing masks over their faces as protection against the thick smoke. Reporters at the scene said that the smoke had a very chemical smell to it, possibly due to the medicines stocked at the warehouse. Other eyewitnesses at the scene have said that they noticed cracks appearing in the walls of the warehouse.
Haveeru reporters at the scene said that the fire had been brought under control by 1:50pm but thick acrid smoke was still seen emerging from the building. MNDF personnel and members of the public were seen assisting with the removal of boxes of medicines and other goods stored inside the warehouse. Several explosions were also heard from inside the building when the fire had been raging inside the building.
