Mohamed Nasheed, who beat President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in the country’s first-ever multiparty elections to become the country’s fourth president, received messages of congratulations from India and America last Wednesday.
The statement issued by the American Foreign Ministry said that the presidential election held in Maldives was the result of many years of work, and noted the reform process and introduction of multiparty politics into the country. It also said that the election was a historical event.
The American Government thanks President Maumoon for introducing democracy to the people of the Maldives, the statement said.
Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of the world’s biggest democracy India, also congratulated Mohamed Nasheed on his victory and expressed his confidence that the strong bilateral ties between the two countries would continue to develop.
Following the elections, the Commonwealth also congratulated Mohamed Nasheed on winning the elections. The Secretary General of the Commonwealth said that by the end of President Maumoon’s presidency he had managed to bring peace, prosperity and democracy to the country.
