Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) was sworn in as the Maldives' 4th president on Tuesday morning. Mr Nasheed defeated Maumoon Abdul Gayoom last month in the Indian Ocean archipelago's first multi-party presidential election.
In the run-off round of presidential elections held on 28th October, Nasheed won 54.21 percent of the votes while Gayoom won 45.79 percent.
The ceremony held at Dharubaaruge on 11th November 2008 officially ended three decades of autocratic rule by Gayoom, who was elected as the President of the Maldives in 1978.
At a joint press conference held at the president's office on Monday, Gayoom congratulated Nasheed and offered him assistance in the future. Nasheed wished Gayoom future "success", saying he would accept the offer of advice.
Mr Nasheed, a former Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, has promised to root out corruption, deliver better healthcare and communications to remote islands and cut state spending.
