Nineteen parties expressed interest in developing Airport

A total of 19 parties had expressed interest in developing the Malé International Airport on a joint-venture basis by the time the deadline for submissions had passed, the Finance Ministry has said.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry on Tuesday, Airport operators from Europe, Asia, and Africa had expressed interest in developing the Airport as a joint venture since the invitation to
Male' International Airportexpress interest had been announced in November, and later extended in December. With the extension given in December the deadline had been set for 15 January 2009.

The Ministry said that they were now short-listing the names of the companies that had expressed interest and that the short-list would be announced soon, paving the way for proposals to be submitted.

The first time that the invitation for the Expression of Interest had been opened, the Anti-Corruption Commission had stated that there were loopholes in the process that would facilitate corruption and the initial invitation had been cancelled. The second invitation had been made with the amendments proposed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in place.
