Maldives to ban shark export

The ban on exporting shark products will become effective in March 2010, the Ministry of Fisheries has said.

Speaking at a news conference held at Dharubaaruge last Wednesday, the Minister of Fisheries Dr Ibrahim Didi said that the revenue earned from tourism was five times higher than that made from exporting shark products. He said that the decision to ban the export of sharks and shark products had been made after discussing the matter with the Fisheries Advisory Board.

He further said that studies had shown that there was a possibility that the shark populations in Maldivian waters were facing danger of extinction.
